Schedule for Week 5
Hello, Baker families!
Welcome to Week 5 of Freedom School! This week is PACKED with awesome field trips, lunches, afternoon activities, and a parent workshop! As always, here is a brief overview 🙂
On Thursday (7/20), we will be hosting a Parent/Teacher Workshop! You will have the chance to experience an abbreviated version of the Integrated Reading Curriculum, and touch base with myself and your scholar’s teacher! We are still finalizing timing for this event, and would greatly appreciate your feedback. Please follow this link to vote for your preferred timing.
This Wednesday marks our National Day of Social Action! On this day, scholars and staff from Freedom Schools all over the country take part in a variety of actions including engaging with elected officials, joining together for marches and rallies, and serving their community. This year, we will be focusing on our “No Hungry Child” initiative, which aims to educate the public on the challenges associated with being “food insecure”, and assure that children dependent on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) retain their benefits. For more information about the National Day of Social Action, please see the attached parent letter!
This week, the scholars will be taking two field trips! On Tuesday afternoon, we will be heading to the Johnstown Skate & Swim for a pool day that’s been long in the making! Please make sure your scholars have applied sunscreen!
On Wednesday morning, we will head to Waterman Farm to spend our National Day of Social Action planting and harvesting produce that will be transported to local food deserts, receiving a tour of the farm, and learning about food insecurity with the founder of the UNITY Fridge Program. Please make sure your scholars have applied sunscreen, and send them with adult scissors if possible!
Each scholar was sent home with permission slips for both field trips (as well as a waiver for Waterman Farm) on Friday, but they are also attached to this here and will be available at drop-off and pick-up.
